Hello, my name is Jacob Malkin, I have a Bachelor of Music-Music Performance-Instrumental Emphasis degree from Northern Arizona University, and I am a certified teacher in the state of Arizona. I have been teaching band to students in grades 5th through 8th for Tucson Unified School District for three years. I have had music students from all walks of life in my experience as a music educator for the public schools. While attending Northern Arizona University, I got to experience playing principle clarinet for the NAU Symphony Orchestra and the NAU Wind Ensemble. I was also a part of the school's chamber ensembles: the clarinet quartet and the wind quintet. In addition, I have experience with the NAU Ragtime Band as well. My most mastered instruments are the single reed family: clarinets and the saxophones.
My approach to teaching is making connections between the music we learn and the music we experience as part of everyday life. It is in these connections that we find the value in learning to understand music and it helps us to understand why the music in the movies, shows, and games we enjoy has an effect on us. Understanding music helps us to highlight and appreciate the passive musical moments of everyday life.
