Eric

Professional training and performance experience:
Eric Ashley is a “born and bred New Yorker and proud of it!” Singing professionally from the age of 8, Eric has been entertaining audiences from coast to coast and Europe! During his High School and College years, Eric studied Music/Theory and was taught privately by James Carson, one of New York’s Premier Voice Teachers. Jim has helped many seasoned Broadway performers save their voices!

Eric developed his vocal and band-leading skills while a vocalist with industry names such as Steven Scott and Hank Lane, leading to performing at all of New York’s 5-Star Hotels, including the legendary Rainbow Room and Rainbow and Stars. As a result Eric created Eric Ashley Productions, where he continued to book and perform all throughout New York.

Theatre has always been in Eric’s heart. Whenever on hiatus, Eric performed in both Summer Stock and Dinner Theatre, in such shows as “They’re Playing Our Song”,
“The King and I”, “My Fair Lady” and “Sugar” (the musical version of “Some Like it Hot”).

Eric and his wife Robyn have made Tucson their home over the past four years. They have 2 children, Carole and Ricky, who were also bitten by the show business bug in early childhood. Eric started to work with them on their voices and they went on to perform in Off-Broadway and Broadway productions. At this time, Eric began giving voice lessons to his children’s friends in the industry. Currently, Carole and Ricky write and record music as well. They both work in the music industry in NYC, where they live.

Since working at Allegro, several of Eric’s students have been cast in many shows around Tucson and even sing with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra Chorus, as well as local bands in the area. Out of 50 plus students Eric will proudly be taking 13 of his students to perform at Carnegie Hall/Weill Recital Hall in June of this year. This is a major event for not only the Allegro School of Music but for Eric and his students, as well!

Teaching approach:

Teaching voice has always been more than teaching someone to read music and hitting notes on a page. I start out by getting to know the student getting them to relax and open up as to why they want to sing in the first place. From there, we talk about what they want to sing. Before they know it, they are singing and enjoying the process! I take a vested interest in every student I teach, as if they were my own family. Singing is an emotional process, not just technical. You are dealing with every day variables, I help them around these variables to get them to where they want to be vocally in a relatively short amount of time. I always look forward to getting to know them and THEIR VOICE!

Fun facts about Eric:
⁃ Eric has been an avid movie buff from the age of 12, especially films prior to 1950 and of course, musicals!

⁃ Eric is obsessed with vacuum cleaners! No kidding, just ask his wife!

John

*Please note: John is currently teaching ONLINE ONLY*

I moved here to Tucson from Southern California. I love the hiking, pace of life and the people here. I have been a guitarist/teacher most of my life. My love for guitar and music began in elementary school, when our music teacher allowed us to try various instruments. After that, I new the guitar was for me. It was in Jr. High that I began taking lessons and learning songs by ear from Santana to Genesis. In college, I studied theory, piano, music appreciation and took a professional musician performance class. I eventually opened up my own recording studio in Southern California where I produced, recorded and played on many local bands and artists' projects. After some years in the studio, I desired to pursue something that I felt had greater meaning. I began teaching guitar, art, music, coaching, along with many other things, at MVCS private school. I found I loved teaching and did this for 15 years. During this time, I also became a recording artist with Spotted Peccary Music, which I’ve released two recordings and am working on a third. I have had my music featured in the top 20 for the year by Textura.org and in the top 100 for the last 20 years of Echoes Radio. I’ve strived to be a complete player who can play finger style, electric lead and still keep up with modern music. I really enjoy seeing students grow and discover their own voice on the guitar, no matter their age or skill level.

Teaching approach: I consider music is such an important part of our lives that positively connect ourselves with others. It provides unique and creative perspective to learn the world. With that in mind, I believe that maintaining one’s inner drive is the core value of my teaching approach.

In order to protect and maintain one’s inner drive for music, I like to make tailored plans based on each individual’s needs and interests to help them reach their goals. Different ages require different motivations. I want all of my students feel valued and respected when work with me. I consider myself as an encouraging, patient, communicative, and goal‐oriented person. I like to build trusting relationships with my students through positive attitude and verbal encouragement, even during the tough moments. I love to be communicative with both parents and students because I want to make sure that we are always working as a team to accomplish the same goal. Piano learning requires time and effort, and sometimes the practice can be tedious. But I promise that with patience and drive, everybody will eventually get to where they want to be. I like to frequently remind the students about their goals to give them some ideas about how much they’ve achieved and how long they still need to go. I believe that we all get more motivated through tangible and quantified feedback and results. All in all, I love to participant the process in which the students are learning, growing and enjoying the moment when they are making music. That truly brings me happiness and sense of achievement.

10 Fun facts about me:

He then came to Tucson in 2016 to take care of his ailing mother, who passed in 2017, and decided to settle in Tucson. He has now been working for Allegro since 2018.

Teaching approach:

Terry employs a flexible approach to piano teaching, utilizing the traditional graded book methods along with some innovative approaches to Ear Training, playing chords, and improvisation geared towards putting the student's two hands together with songs as soon as possible - keeping the "Fun" & interest factors high. He is great with kids and adults of all ages and levels, beginning to advanced and up to university and artist levels. He teaches all styles, classical to jazz, blues to pop and rock, or as they say, “Bach to Rock.” Terry currently has over 50 happy, satisfied, and progressing piano students here at Allegro, with most of them participating and performing in the twice yearly recitals at the Catalina Foothills auditorium. This past June 2023, three of Terry’s younger students performed at Carnegie Hall in NYC with Allegro School of Music. Terry also performed and accompanied several vocal and violin students there as well. Happy piano playing and music making!

Fun facts about Terry:
1. Terry has a Youtube channel where you can check out his informal and private piano performances, search for user Harriter88
2. He is the son of the late Emmy award winning actor Pat Harrington Jr. Schneider of famed hit 80s TV show, “One Day at a Time”
3. Terry is currently composing a large scale work for piano and orchestra for his great friend/colleague and famous pianist, Kevin Cole, that when finished will be premiered by him.
4. Terry could have very well gone into the acting business like his famous father, (though as the bio indicated he did part time, having the lead role as Captain Von Trapp in his junior high school production of “The Sound of Music”) but instead decided to follow his passion for music and teaching, the noble profession.

Melissa

Violin and viola, age 6+; adult novice fiddle

Melissa Hamilton is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, where she received both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Viola Performance. Melissa is proud to call Tucson her hometown, and she grew up playing in TUSD school orchestras, Tucson Junior Strings (TJS) and the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra (TPYO). She studied violin and viola as a private student of Dennis Bourret and fell in love with playing string quartets up on Mt. Lemmon, at TJS’ Chamber Music in the Mountains (CMIM). During college summers and beyond, she returned to CMIM as a popular coach. While in Seattle, she was privileged to become the adjunct viola instructor and violist of the Pacific String Quartet in residence at Western Washington University.

Mrs. Hamilton has taught in a wide variety of settings: community music schools, public and private school orchestra, after-school orchestra club, private home studio, and adult chamber music workshops. She currently performs as a “sub” with the Tucson Symphony and as a violist/fiddler at her church.  Melissa is constantly researching and learning new styles of music because of the diverse interests of her students!

Melissa especially enjoys helping school-aged students thrive in their school orchestras and is delighted to help them get ready for concerts, playing tests, and whatever else is needed for them to  perform with confidence and experience the sheer joy of music-making with friends! Her teaching style is “news you can use” - she won’t make students do anything without a good reason for doing it.  Adult “newbie” fiddlers who have become frustrated trying to teach themselves from youtube will find her to be an understanding and patient tutor.

Some fun facts about Melissa:

(1)  Her beautiful daughter Hannah was adopted from China at the age of 3.

(2) Her whole family is nuts about Lord of the Rings, Narnia, and Star Wars!

(3) We are fans of the Seattle Seahawks, the Mariners, and the AZ Diamondbacks (and the Dodgers are the Evil Empire of the West).

(4) She had a short stint playing electric bass for a church worship team and loves classic rock music.

I have been playing the guitar for 17 years starting out as a self taught musician and later taking lessons to round out my knowledge of the instrument something I find myself still doing to this day. I approach teaching with a student forward focus, whatever you need to learn can be learned while teaching you what you like to hear. Joshua’s emphasizes giving the student enough information and problem solving skills so they can "become their own teacher" when they are at home working on things on their own. He concentrates on learning the basics of notes and rests, rhythm, coordination, song form, anything pertaining to having a strong foundational understanding of the drum set and its role in playing music. He also tries to balance the “Work” and “Play” aspect of learning the instrument, making sure to set aside time for being creative, experimenting, learning songs and music, while not neglecting the “Work” side of things (repetitive practice, exercises, acquiring new skills etc…).

Fun Facts About Joshua

  • Some of his favorite drummers are Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, John Bonham, Chris Dave, Thomas Pridgen, Roy Haynes, Jack Dejohnette, Marcus Gilmore, and Billy Cobham
  • He likes riding his bike
  • He likes sneakers (Jordan 4s are one of his favorites)
  • A Love Supreme is one of his favorite Jazz albums
  • He jammed along to Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin when he first started playing drums
  • He makes beats/produces
  • He has been trying to learn some bass guitar

Luma

Please note: Luma is currently teaching ONLINE ONLY

Luma discovered the joy of piano at age four when she could play almost any song she heard by ear. At age nine she dove passionately into private piano lessons and acting that eventually led to a rich professional life of music theatre, concert performance, award-winning composing and teaching music.

Her Hollywood and New York acting experiences include film, TV and theatre along side the likes of Kevin Spacey, Mare Winningham, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ned Beatty and others giving her a strong sense of professional discipline and inspiration. She was composer and musical director for the critically acclaimed rock opera Woman Of Light that was performed in Denver, Colorado and London and received multiple standing ovations.

As a member of the Blue Summerstar band, Luma toured and performed as vocalist, keyboardist, banjo player and songwriter. As composers and recording artists, she and her partner won the International Moondance Film Festival Award for Best Film Score.

Luma studied music theatre and dance at University of California, Northridge and music theory at Jamie Faunt School of Music. Privately she trained with Los Angeles master teachers of piano, music theory and classical technique. Alexander Dmitri from Russia, fourth generation student of Beethoven lineage through Liszt, passed on invaluable expressive piano techniques to Luma which she in turn passes on to all of her students. Helene Mirisch Spear, piano and music master teacher of many celebrities in Los Angeles, actually mentored Luma into becoming a great teacher.

To stay home with her two young sons Luma became a member of MTNA and founded “Kidsmusic” in Los Angles and Boulder, Colorado with her unique fun programs and recitals. She has now been joyfully teaching and coaching all ages for over 28 years in Los Angeles, Colorado, Santa Fe and Tucson. She plays piano, keyboards, harp, banjo, ukulele and sings.

Luma believes that the passion of a student playing what they like to play is the key to them sticking with the due diligence required to see satisfying results. So she skillfully mixes those songs in with lesson books. She uses sight reading techniques as well as encouraging playing by ear. Each student learns differently so that is also considered in the lessons. She pulls songs from classical, pop, rock, Broadway, movie soundtracks and folk songs to create a well-rounded palette of learning. Finger technique, rhythm, music theory, notation and performance skills are all included. Luma has a way with each student to encourage progress and a sense of self-accomplishment through a fun atmosphere of learning. She is delighted to be a part of Allegro School of Music!

Morena

Born in Japan and daughter of professional musicians, Morena always loved
performing. She recorded her first feature at age 3 on her mother’s album “Good Lovin’.” At age
4 she came to the U.S., spending a lot of her childhood in Las Vegas. That same year she began
dancing for and musically mentored by Rock n’ Roll legend: Little Richard, which continued on
for a decade. As a 5th grader, Morena wrote her first song “I Wonder Why” for a regional
songwriting competition, moving her up to Nationals, and earned an Award of Merit &
Congressional Honors Award. Her song was showcased at The House of Blues. Later, Morena
was featured as a title track for a Nickelodeon/Disney inspired project for upcoming singers. She
grew up singing in church and stayed involved in classical choirs singing in both Vegas and
Boston.
In 2011, Morena made her move to Los Angeles. By high school, she had been in 3
musicals: Chicago, The Lion King, and the Music Man. She competed in talent shows, wrote a
song for an original play production and stayed involved in the arts through her school years.
While majoring in music during college, she founded a band and collaborated with local LA
talent. In 2016, her debut single “It’s My Life” was released, reminiscent of the sound of
Parliament/Funkadelic with a modern twist. She performed at various events in Los Angeles,
including the MTV Music Awards after party in Hollywood and the Echo Park Rising Festival.
The next year, “Sow & Reap” was released and rapidly moved up on the Top 40 charts to the
Top 10 within four consecutive weeks on ReverbNation. Morena writes and produces music as
well as teaching dance and music.

Morgan

My name is Morgan and I have been playing the cello for 10 years and teaching for the last two. I am a current member of the cello studio at the Fred Fox School of Music and a member of the Philharmonic Orchestra at the University of Arizona. I have experience playing in many orchestras, chamber ensembles, gig events and have traveled out of state to play in orchestra performances to places such as California and Boston. I have enjoyed playing solos as principal cellist in orchestras and being a quartet cellist, which has been my favourite kind of ensemble to play with. From all these experiences, I also have great advice to share with students on audition preparation and etiquette.

Music is a tool for creativity and I enjoy passing it along by teaching cello! I believe every student should learn the basis of good cello technique while also being allowed to explore their individual curiosities and interests with their cello. I enjoy working with students of all ages and helping them find their unique path in the world of cello music making.  My goal as a cello teacher is to set a solid foundation for the student and give them practice strategies to aid them in their individual practice. I try to provide the appropriate amount of guidance and direction, encouraging support where the student needs it while also giving them the space to make discoveries for themselves.

As a composer I have found it necessary never to stray too far from performance. The sheer exhilaration one can obtain through playing an instrument is unique and powerful. I have devoted my life to trying to understand and master this elusive beast called Music. As a child, or a peculiar spirit, I demanded my parents get me guitar and piano lessons. I felt an instant connection to these instruments and was compelled to investigate. After years of inquiry I ended up attending New School for Arts, a high school devoted to the arts where I studied music composition. From there, I went on to the University of Arizona to receive degrees in Music Composition and Philosophy with minors in Mathematics and English Literature. For my Masters’ programs I wandered into the world of contemporary composers and experimental music at Mills College in Oakland where I finished my M.A. Music Composition as well as my M.F.A in Electronic Music and Recording Media. All the while pursuing a mastery of the instruments that caught my ear in the first place.

I am laid back and playful in my approach to music lessons. I like to gear lessons toward the interests of the student, and if I am doing my job correctly, all the traditional techniques will be painless. I also like to delve into music theory to give one a deeper appreciation as well as an understanding and steady grasp of the tools of composition if their heart is so inclined. When it comes to music I am rather eclectic and I feel every style has something to add to the techniques of a solid performer, so I tend to draw from many disparate places to offer a fuller experience. In no time at all, you should be playing pieces you love, understanding how they work, and perhaps embellishing them or writing your own.
